The sky over Karnaca was drowning in a sickly gray, the wind carried the scent of salt and decay, and the rain fell slow but steady, like a funeral whisper over the city’s rooftops. From the balcony of the old palace, Lord Adrien Vascari watched the storm with a cup of wine in his hand, his thoughts as murky as the sky that loomed over the city.

"Do you know what people say?" his sister, Lady Mirielle, asked without taking her eyes off the flickering lights below. "That the rain washes away the blood of traitors."

Adrien smirked, bitter.

"And who in this city isn’t a traitor?"

The steel of his sword still bore stains from Lord Renaud’s execution, a fallen noble accused of conspiring against Duke Abele. The irony was that Adrien had been part of the same conspiracy. But he had been quicker, smarter. He had sold out Renaud before Renaud could sell him. Now, he had his title, his lands, and perhaps soon, his same fate.

Karnaca was like that. A city built on the edge of knives, where the strong survived and the weak bled out in the gutters.

Below, on the docks, a group of workers unloaded barrels of whale oil under the rain. Slaves to the industry that kept the Empire alive. In the distant hills, the windmills turned slowly, their blades groaning under the weight of the storm. Beyond them, through the mist, the houses flickering with lantern light looked like a swarm of fireflies trapped in the dark.

"They will call you a hero for what you did today," Mirielle said. "They will say you rid Karnaca of a rat."

Adrien let out a dry laugh.

"The rat is still here. And it’s still hungry."

His sister didn’t reply. She only stared toward the sea, where the waves crashed against the cliffs, and in her eyes was the certainty that, sooner or later, every betrayal found its price.

The rain kept falling. It always rained in Karnaca.
