Fan-throated lizards are found only in the Indian subcontinent, where they evolved under the influence of a changing climate that modified habitats. The lizards originated 26 million years ago from a forest-dwelling ancestor and adapted to a dry environment. They are a diverse group of at least 15 species in India and 18 in the subcontinent. They are found in dry, rocky habitats in India and Sri Lanka

Fan-throated lizards are small, brightly colored lizards found in India and Sri Lanka. They are the only member of the genus Sitana and are closely related to the more widespread agamid lizards. Fan-throated lizards are diurnal animals that are active during the day. They have metallic colored skin patches that hang from their throats which is used by male lizards to flaunt and attract their female counterparts. The feature is also used to display aggression and warn off mating competitors

Males of fan-throated lizards develop beautiful blue, black and orange colors just before the breeding season1. The dewlap, which is the fan-like skin patch that hangs from their throats, comes in hues of metallic black, orange, blue and cream – or all in one

The breeding season for fan-throated lizards is mainly in May-June. Fan-throated lizards are known for their expandable flap of skin under their throat, known as a dewlap or a gular fan. These lizards expand this dewlap like a fan for various purposes like warning enemies, courtship, identifying the species, etc.

The fan-throated lizard has a very unusual diet – it eats other lizards.
