Kampf um den Himalaja (1938) is an epic documentary about the tragic 1937 German Nanga Parbat expedition (directed by Franz Schröder). All but two expedition members of the 1937 Nanga Parbat Expedition perished on the slopes of the mountain in a snow and ice avalanche.

After a first unsuccessful attempt in 1932 and the tragic second expedition led by Willy Merkl in 1934, Karl Wien led another expedition to the mountain in 1937 following the same route as Merkl's expeditions. Progress was made, but more slowly than before due to heavy snowfall. On the 14th of June seven of the nine German expedition members and nine Sherpas, almost the entire team, were at Camp IV below Rakhiot Peak when the camp was overrun by an avalanche. All sixteen men died. The two German expedition members that survived were Dr. Ulrich Luft and Prof. Carl Troll. The film was assembled in 1938 from rescued 16mm material filmed during the 1937 ascent and footage from previous expeditions.
