STORYLINE:

The ruins of Ancient Olympia have witnessed great Olympic stories.

Out on the stadium grounds, the great boxer Diagoras of Rhodes - feeble with age - was carried by his sons in 448 BC for a final encore.

Here, the hulking wrestler Milo of Kroton would destroy opponents and then dare anyone to try to push him from a greased disc.

On the chariot track, Roman Emperor Nero declared himself victor in 67 AD despite falling during the race.

New tales will be written on Wednesday inside a 7-foot shot putt circle when Olympians return to this valley of pine and laurel for the first time since 393 AD - a gap of more than 1,600 years.

"The image that will be sent will be exceptional because all of us will turn back many centuries to 776 BC and we will see in what natural space the Olympic Games were held," deputy Culture Minister Petros Tatoulis told APTN.

The athletes - including the first women to formally compete as Olympians at the game's birthplace - will step onto the carpet of fine dirt and pebbles on the stadium floor. Spectators meanwhile will gather on grassy slopes nearby.

The games were first held in 776 BC in a sanctuary long associated with rites and worship.
