🗻 Polovragi Cave is located in the Căpățânii Mountains, on the banks of the Olteț River 🌊, at 670 m altitude and 20 m above the riverbed, within Polovragi commune, between Horezu and Baia de Fier, Gorj County, Oltenia, Romania.
⛪ Starting from Polovragi Monastery, the path passes through Polovragi Forest 🌳, a protected natural area for edible chestnut trees 🌰. The entrance into Olteț Gorges marks the beginning of a spectacular landscape, with vertical rock walls ⛰ stretching for 3 km.
✨ Legends say that Zalmoxis 🙏, the Dacian god, once lived here, while healers used the rare plant polovragă 🌿 as a remedy against illnesses.
This legend is also recorded by Alexandru Vlahuță in “Picturesque Romania” (1901), describing Zamolxe as the protector god who urged Dacians to fight for their land. The drops that still seep today are said to be his tears 💧, mourning the fate of the Dacians conquered by the Romans.
🌡 The cave maintains a constant temperature of 9°C and 90% humidity, “weeping” with mineral drops that color the gallery: the Bloody Vault ❤️, the White Chamber 🤍, and the Divine Hall ✨.
🚶♂️ Of the more than 10 km explored by speleologists, only 800 m are open to visitors. The first sector once served as a refuge for Dacians, healers, and monks – here you can find the Throne of Zalmoxis, Dacian symbols ⚔, smoke-black paintings, and the Spring of Hopes 💦.
🪨 The Ogives Sector impresses with stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and underground pools – true natural sculptures 🏞.
🦇 The cave shelters a colony of ~300 bats of the “horseshoe bat” species 🦇, masters of echolocation 🔊, hunting mosquitoes with ultrasonic precision.

🔊 They use echolocation – emitting ultrasounds (30,000–150,000 Hz) 🎶, imperceptible to humans 👂❌.
💨 Air expelled through the larynx acts like a whistle 🎵, creating extremely fast vibrations ⚡.
🚂 The air pressure in a bat’s larynx is twice that of a steam locomotive!
📡 The echoes return in 0.1 seconds ⏱, allowing bats to measure distances 📍 and catch prey 🦟 with amazing accuracy.
