(15 Dec 2013) Syrian refugees in Lebanon struggled to cope with the aftermath of a powerful winter storm on Sunday after it swept across the region bringing snow and plummeting temperatures.
The border town of Arsal, home to more than 40,000 Syrian refugees, was particularly hard hit.
Many in the camp have little more than the most basic food and shelter and have been forced to burn whatever they can to stay warm.
In some cases, refugees have resorted to burning articles of clothing, like rubber sandals, for lack of wood.
"My husband is sick and the cold weather is hurting us," one woman said. "We are becoming sick from smell of the stove."
Aid groups are aware of the crisis but have struggled to provide enough resources to those in need.
According to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), it is working closely with the Lebanese army to distribute emergency kits, including blankets and plastic tarpaulins.
Nevertheless, the UN says it is "extremely concerned" at the present conditions.
Since the Syrian conflict began in March 2011, more than two million Syrians - at least half of them children - have fled the violence in their homeland to neighbouring countries including Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and Iraq.
