In this lecture for a the course at Simon Fraser University, Professor Gerardo Otero presents a synthesis of the first half of Thomas Piketty's book, Capital in the Twenty-First Century. It consists of Piketty's formulation of his research problem about inequality since the start of capitalism in 1700. It is also an exposition of his main concepts for an anatomy of capitalism and his main findings in parts I and II of his book. In Part II, Otero will cover Piketty's question of why is it that the return on capital, r, is greater than the growth rate, g since the neoliberal turn in the 1980s.
