U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy launched a new civility campaign to bring courtesy, safety, and respect back to air travel just in time for the holiday rush. With unruly passenger incidents rising, this campaign reminds us to show up with more awareness and care in shared spaces.

As an etiquette expert and former flight attendant, here are my top travel etiquette tips for the season:

1. Pack Your Patience
Holiday travel is stressful for everyone. Arrive early and expect lines and delays. A calm attitude and a friendly smile can set a better tone for everyone.

2. Use “Please” and “Thank You”
Flight crews, gate agents, TSA, and service teams work hard under pressure. A kind word can lift someone’s day and often leads to better service.

3. Respect Personal Space
Armrests, overhead bins, and seat recline are shared. Use them mindfully. If you recline, check behind you first.

4. Handle Carry-Ons Thoughtfully
Lift your own bag when you can. Offer help to someone who may struggle, like parents, seniors, or disabled passengers.

5. Keep Your Voice Down
Airports and planes are tight spaces. Keep calls short and quiet, avoid speakerphone, and be mindful of loud conversations.

6. Support Parents and Pet Owners
Kids and pets get tired and overstimulated. Bring snacks and distractions, and give grace to families doing their best.

7. Dress and Behave With Respect
How you present yourself sets the tone. Aim for comfortable and polished. Manners still matter at 30,000 feet.

Civility is not just polite. It helps keep everyone safe and makes travel more enjoyable.
