"We have a common objective - the need to eliminate weapons of mass destruction in Iraq - there is no difference in opinion here. However, on the contrary, where we do differ is how we are going to obtain that objective. As you know, France considers that it is possible to obtain that objective by peaceful means. That is, through more inspections - and that war is not inevitable and that in any case, war is the worst solution and constitutes a failure."

"The Spanish position is that we are working within the framework of the United Nations, which refers to the 1991 article 607 which has as its conclusion resolution 1441 demanding Iraq's disarmament. And we understand that the way of managing this crisis should continue at the Security Council and we understand that it would be convenient to have another resolution from the United Nations. This would be to guarantee two things. First, the central role of the Security Council and secondly, to put as much pressure as possible on the Iraqi regime to get them to disarm".

STORYLINE
The leaders of France and Spain were unable to settle their differences over how to solve the Iraqi crisis on Wednesday.
Speaking to the media after a meeting at the Elysee Palace in Paris, Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar and French President Jacques Chirac outlined their different positions.
Chirac signaled France's opposition to a draft UN resolution submitted on Monday by the United States, Britain and Spain to pave the way for war.
Aznar, a key US ally in the crisis with Iraq, welcomed the draft resolution, calling it "appropriate".
The prime minister had been expected to try to build support for the resolution declaring that Iraq has missed its chance to disarm peacefully.
But despite his staunch support for Washington, he has so far given no indication about whether Spain would contribute military forces in any drive against Baghdad.
Aznar has conceded that his backing for the United States is eroding his popularity at home, but says he considers his position a matter of principle and would not let domestic politics interfere.
The talks between the French and Spanish leaders came ahead of a debate on the Iraq crisis in the French parliament, which was expected to voice broad support for Chirac's anti-war stance.
