Unprecedented Performance
Legend of White Snake

Water pouring down from the sky and costumed creatures that seem to spawn from all directions. Utilizing real fire and water on stage, blurring the boundaries that are used to define the three dimensional space that extend from the stage to the audience to recreate an impactful scene in Ming Hwa Yuan’s Legend of White Snake. The performance also successfully breaks the record for most audience in an out-door theatre performance that has been branded by some as a theatrical experience that must go through at least once in a lifetime.

Legend of White Snake by Ming Hwa Yuan is adapted from household folklore of an ancient White Snake who escaped to the human realm to repay Xu Xian’s kind deed that was extended in his previous life. This act infuriated Arhat FaHai, who pursued the White Snake all the way to the human realm and vowed to recapture the escaped creature.

Ming Hwa Yuan did a lot of tweaks and alterations to the original story. One of it is the characterization of the story’s main protagonist, Lady White’s character. It differs from what was traditionally portrayed in the sense that the new adaptation put a lot of emphasis on the White Snake’s “positive human” side. For instance, in the folklore, Lady White contaminated the town’s well to help boost business for her husband’s dispensary, whereas in Ming Hwa Yuan’s version, Lady White (White SuZhen) is shown to be more concerned with the wellbeing of other human populace by secretly administering medication in the well to prevent the wide spread of diseases. The resulting success is the creation of a new character that will be the center of Ming Hwa Yuan’s new Legend of White Snake.

From the standpoint of artistic expression, Legend of White Snake had been traditionally a showcase of action scenes and ended with reunion of husband and wife for Xu Xian and Lady White. This was accomplished by anchoring the story arch to hinge on the universal affection of motherly love. At the end of Ming Hwa Yuan’s version, White SuZhen is portrayed more as a mother, whose sincere prayer for a human child was answered. The lasting image of a mother who tried to fend off enemy with a sword in one hand while cradling her new born child with her other arm. With the final message of remembering, Lady White as a mother, will strike a deep, resounding resonance with the audience.

A fusion of Installation Art and Multimedia Technology
Transformation to a blazing stage
Legend of White Snake has been viewed by more than a million audiences in 13 performances within the period of 9 years. As an international release version, the whole stage will be treated like an installation art piece and no longer used solely to accommodate or present performances only. Using multimedia effects, the transformable stage of Ming Hwa Yuan will switch in an instant from a performance platform to one that resembles the “Golden Mount Temple” of the story. The transformation of the exterior will be in tandem with the change of stage props to coincide with the unfolding of the plots.

The visionary and crossover fusion of traditional and contemporary percussion, orchestra, jazz etc. forms the musical backbone that will bring out the best in the international version of Legend of White Snake.
