Описание к видео Language Comparison: The Days of the Week in 15 Germanic Languages

Hello everyone! Welcome to Parchment Lore! Thank you so much for watching! If you liked the video, consider liking and subscribing (and clicking the notification bell) to see more content! It really helps the channel, since more viewers/subscribers allows me to make higher-quality videos!

Also, if you know anyone interested in linguistics or etymology, consider sharing this video with them! It was certainly interesting to research for this video and observe the similarities/differences between the Germanic languages!

This video compares the days of the week across 15 Germanic languages (and their etymological origins from Proto-West Germanic and Old Norse), including:

• English
• Scots
• West Frisian
• Dutch
• Afrikaans
• High German
• Low German
• Yiddish
• Luxembourgish
• Icelandic
• Faroese
• Danish
• Norwegian
• Swedish
• Elfdalian
• Gutnish

Beware: There are probably errors in pronunciation or orthography! I am not an expert in Germanic languages, just a linguistics enthusiast!

This video took a little while to make (around 3 weeks and 10-ish takes on the pronunciation!), so there may be errors which were impractical to perfect later in the editing process... Here are a few notes!

1) Each pronunciation in the video was based on one dialect for a language, so unfortunately the realizations for dialects like British English or Swiss German were not included. This was done to save time and enhance the legibility of the remaining text.
2) The Scots pronunciation used an alveolar approximant for the rhotic sound, though other dialects use the trill!
3) I couldn't find a definitive source as to whether the Gutnish forms end in "-ar" or if that is simply an inflectional ending. I chose the simpler form (for better or worse!).
4) There are more Germanic languages than the ones included! 15 was as much as I could handle in the recording and editing process, but if you speak another Germanic language (or really a language from any other family!) put your days of the week in the comments!
5) Afrikaans isn't as widely spoken in all of the regions in the above map. However, for simplicity, I chose to use country borders instead of speaking area for this map (except for the Italian province of South Tyrol, which I recently learned has a very high German-speaking population). This practice saved me a few weeks of research, at the expense of some rigor!
6) The pronunciation of "Tysday" was a bit unknown... According to the sound laws that led to Scots, it should have been something like [tjusde], but a variety of sources seem to agree that it has a diphthong sound like [ei], [ai], or [ae]... Clarification is appreciated!

Advice on pronunciation and more information about these languages is always welcomed in the comments! Now onto credits...
