At least 36 people have been killed and almost 300 others are still unaccounted for, after a fire that engulfed high-rise apartment buildings in Hong Kong and burned for hours. Authorities have arrested three people for alleged manslaughter in connection with the inferno. A fire in one tower, under renovation, is believed to have spread to six others – trapping people inside. As Redmond Shannon reports, bamboo scaffolding and construction mesh surrounding the buildings may have led to the fire's rapid spread.

In the U.S., two National Guard members were shot and left in critical condition Wednesday afternoon in Washington, D.C., near the White House. The allegedly “targeted shooting” was committed by a lone suspect, who was also shot in an exchange of gunfire and remains in custody. Jackson Proskow reports.

Back in Canada, what Prime Minister Mark Carney wanted to talk about Wednesday was new measures he's putting in place to support Canada’s steel and lumber industries – both suffering because of the unresolved trade war with the United States. Mackenzie Gray explains what's planned, as well as the reaction.

Though the extra support is being welcomed by those in the struggling softwood lumber industry, they also caution that it's not a long-term solution. Heidi Petracek has a reaction from those most impacted, and why they say the relief they really need feels out of reach.
