For most of human history (almost 99%) 🌍, children learned important skills from their community instead of schools 🎒. A study by Washington State University on hunter-gatherer children in the Congo Basin found that by age six or seven, they could hunt 🏹, find edible plants 🌿, and care for babies 👶.
What can we, as caregivers or parents, learn from the environment of hunter-gatherer children? 🤔
Encourage Learning from a Variety of People 👨👩👧👦
📌 Example: A grandparent shares storytelling, a neighbor teaches gardening, and extracurriculars provide new mentors.
Foster Independence & Autonomy 🚀
📌 Example: Guide them in baking a cake but let them measure, mix, and troubleshoot independently.
Teach Through Observation 👀
📌 Example: Greet warmly, express thanks, and handle conflicts calmly—they’ll follow your lead.
Promote Multi-Age Peer Learning 🤝
📌 Example: Siblings or cousins assist with tasks like reading books or playing an instrument.
Make Learning Hands-On & Practical 🌿
📌 Example: Have them calculate grocery bills, measure ingredients, or count change.
Emphasize Community & Cooperation 🌍
📌 Example: Plan meals together, with each child handling a task, and involve them in charity or volunteering.
Respect Individual Learning Styles 🎭
📌 Example: Use comics for a child who struggles with reading or songs for memorization.
