Breath AI, developed at City University of Hong Kong, is an AI-enhanced breathomics platform that pairs high-resolution mass-spectrometry with machine-learning classifiers to decode volatile organic-compound fingerprints in a single exhalation. The team publicly demonstrated the system at the AI For Good #aiforgood Global Summit 2025 in Geneva, positioning it as a rapid, non-invasive alternative to conventional diagnostics. https://www.cityu.edu.hk

The workflow starts with a subject breathing into a sterile, single-use “airbag.” Samples can be collected on-site or off-site, allowing large-scale field screening without hospital queues. In the laboratory, a time-of-flight mass-spectrometer captures full metabolic spectra; a neural-network pipeline then maps these spectra to disease signatures in around three minutes. The current model reliably flags diseases, tuberculosis and diabetes, and training sets are being expanded for lung cancer, COPD, kidney dysfunction and broader respiratory infections.

Unlike blood draws or tissue biopsies, a single breath yields multiplex results at an estimated cost of US $10-15 per test, making population-level triage economically viable. The platform’s deep-learning engine handles thousands of spectral features, pruning noise and highlighting discriminative biomarkers while continuously learning from new patient cohorts. The team is already prototyping edge-AI sensor heads for future pocket-sized or smartphone-docking breathalyzers.

Breath AI targets mass deployments in hospitals, clinics, airports and even community outreach vans. The project has secured gold and bronze medals at Geneva Inventions contests and is transitioning to a spin-out company in the second half of 2025. Led by principal investigator Chinfu and supported by President Prof Freddy Boey, Cynthia Sinker, Vinform and Valerie, the group is now engaging regulatory bodies and manufacturing partners to move the technology toward certified clinical use.
