What can be said about this song? “Water” is among the oldest and most cherished songs of Tanner’s. Growing up, Tanner loved all things water. As a child he would fish with his father, swim and play for hours at his grandparents pool, and go boating at his uncle’s lake house. Not only was it a world of fun but it was also an escape. Submerging beneath the water Tanner could mute the outside world, be free of its weight, and retreat to a calm, neutral space without limits… besides oxygen that is. Written around age 16, “Water” is about how Tanner longs to breathe underwater, be free of all of life’s stresses and sorrows, and if that were to come true he might never return to the surface again. The song walks a fine line between drowning and breathing under water which is ironic since both, one being a miracle and the other being a tragedy, are both forms of escape. “Water” laments the reality that relief is often times short lived.
