About the Grand Canal

The Grand Canal is about 3.8 km (2.4 miles) long and forms the main “street” of Venice.
More than 170 historic buildings line its banks, representing centuries of Venetian architecture including Byzantine, Gothic and Renaissance styles.

For hundreds of years, merchants used this canal to transport goods such as spices, silk and precious materials arriving from the East.

Today it remains the most iconic waterway in Venice and one of the most photographed places in the world.
