Spalatum's Diocletian
The 51st Roman emperor Diocletian, 244-312, was born in Salona, Solin, in the Roman province of Dalmatia, an area which extends further that Croatia's present-day coastal region Dalmatia. He made his way through the military ranks to become cavalry commander to the Emperor Carus, Marcus Aurelius Carus Augustus, after which he himself become Emperor of the Roman Empire. He fought many battles, campaigned and triumphs over his rivals, reorganized the empire's civil and military services, and established the largest and most bureaucratic government in the history of the empire. Weakened by illness, Diocletian left the imperial office in 305 to become the first Roman emperor to voluntarily abdicate the position of Emperor. He lived out his retirement in his palace in Spalatum, Split as it is known today, on the Dalmatian coast. The Diocletian palace, as it is known today, since has become the core of Croatia's second largest city and in great part remains preserved monuments of Roman architecture.
