Описание к видео The Rise of the Bourgeoisie Middle Class

The historical roots of the bourgeoisie
In the late Middle Ages the structure of society began to change as cities grew larger. People who lived in these walled towns were known as the bourgeoisie because they were no longer part of the old farming system. They did not belong to the high nobility but they were also not poor peasants working on land. Most of these individuals were involved in trade or owned small workshops where they produced goods. This new group gained more influence as they focused on making money through commerce and early manufacturing.
Economic power through trade
The rise of the middle class was closely connected to the expansion of international trade routes. Merchants began to transport goods over long distances and made significant profits from these activities. They established banks to manage their wealth and invested in new business ventures across the world. This financial strength allowed them to become independent from the traditional power of the kings and lords. As their wealth grew they started to control the economy of many European nations.
Education and the spread of knowledge
Unlike many people in the countryside the members of the middle class valued formal education and learning. They needed to read write and calculate to manage their businesses and trade contracts successfully. This demand for knowledge led to the creation of more schools and the growth of universities in urban areas. They shared ideas about science and philosophy which helped to modernize the way people thought about the world. Literacy rates increased significantly within this group during the transition to the modern era.
Life in the growing cities
Cities became the centers of life for the rising bourgeoisie because that was where the markets were located. They built large comfortable houses that showed their status and success to the public. The streets of these towns were filled with shops and craftspeople making everything from shoes to metal tools. Public life was organized around the city council where the wealthy middle class made important decisions. Living in such close proximity allowed for the rapid exchange of news and new cultural trends.
The importance of hard work
One of the most important values for this new social class was the idea of personal achievement through effort. They believed that success should depend on a person's individual work rather than their family name or title. This mindset was very different from the old system where your position was determined solely by birth. Families encouraged their children to be disciplined and to save money for future investments. This work ethic became a defining characteristic of middle class culture for many generations.
Political influence and rights
As the bourgeoisie became wealthier they began to demand more say in how their countries were governed. They paid large amounts of taxes to the state and felt they should have a voice in political decisions. This group often pushed for new laws that would protect their property and their business interests. They wanted a legal system that was fair and predictable so that trade could flourish without interference. Over time their influence led to significant changes in the way laws were written and enforced.
