Theme: subject from Bach's The Art of Fugue (Die Kunst der Fuge)

III. Canon at the Twelfth (canon alla duodecima).

This collection of seven diverse canons (canons diversi) is a formal nod to J.S. Bach's own Musical Offering (Das Musikalische Opfer). My primary compositional goals were three fold:
1. Make use of The Art of Fugue theme (in either an obvious or derived form)
2. Utilize proper counterpoint between the theme and dux (leading voice of canon; here a non-thematic voice), allowing for a suitably simple, convincing two voice piece. This is what you see in the above score.
3. This same two voice piece must also allow for canonic occurrence. The point of canonic entry is either marked with a musical segno (sign), or, in instances where a segno is absent, the canonic follower (comes) enters at the outset of the piece. This third voice works in proper contrapuntal fashion with both the theme and the dux.

*What's that symbol at the end of the piece?: A monogram of my initials (KES), overlaid forwards and backwards (mirrored images). Just wanted to have some fun with the canonic/contrapuntal nature of this post. Check out J.S. Bach's own monogram as well. Maybe even make one of your own!
