Ducktales 2 is a more expansive version of the original Ducktales. Like the first, you can choose your destination from the get-go, but this time you can see your destinations on a drawn-out map screen. Be careful which levels you choose first, though, because unlike the first game, Ducktales 2 lets ol' Scrooge McDuck upgrade his cane. With the upgraded cane, you'll be able to reach more secrets and discover new pathways in levels by moving or destroying blocks that would otherwise be unpassable.

Sporting some of the same tricks as the original, you find yourself pogoing on enemies' heads to reach secret areas or to scale paths over treacherous gaps. It even seems that they added a little extra height to Scrooge's jump—he feels lighter while traversing. Beyond that, the levels have grown in size, and there are a few new devices Scrooge can use to traverse, like a zip line, a raft, and metal rings he can hook onto with his cane. Some of these devices make their appearance in boss fights, although the bosses are about as challenging as in the first game—just a bit more fleshed out and involving.

I mentioned this in my Chip 'n Dale 2 review, but whoever took over the design of these later Capcom titles definitely had their hands in Darkwing Duck, as I noticed some of the same sprites and mechanics featured in that title. It feels like all these later Disney-Capcom games are melding into one. The game lends itself to a more cryptic side if you're aiming to complete it with all of the map pieces; however, I don't think that's necessary, as I was still earning achievements for some of the maps I picked up—meaning I didn't collect them all in my prior playthrough.

I also believe this is true for the cane upgrades; I don't think any of the game's progress is blocked by them. Personally, I think Ducktales 2 outshines the original in every department except the music. Again, like Chip 'n Dale 2, the music has taken a turn for the worse, featuring only two tracks that could be considered decent. Outside of that, simply put, there's more meat on the bones here, and it delivers a fairer experience with a shop that lets you purchase extra life, lives, and continues.

Closing thoughts: Ducktales 2 is a more expansive and refined experience than its predecessor, with innovative mechanics and a well-designed map screen that elevate the adventure—though its music leaves something to be desired.
