For the first time since taking office, Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je held a public meeting with a Chinese official when he met with Shanghai Vice Mayor Weng Tiehui today. Among the topics discussed was the Taipei-Shanghai forum, currently on hold over Shanghai’s insistence that Ko first affirm the one China principle. When Ko Wen-je personally greeted Weng Tiehui, the pair exchanged gifts. One reason Weng came was to discuss Shanghai’s request that Ko affirm the principle of “one country, two cities” before a Taipei-Shanghai forum take place.
