This is how to work the basic Long Tail Cast On in knits and purls, so you can cast on “in pattern” for any type of ribbed edge.

When you add a second colour into the mix, you get a decorative edge that’s perfect for starting two-colour projects like double knitting. Join the two colours together in the initial slip knot, then hold the main colour over your finger (so it forms the knit stitches) and the contrast colour over your thumb (to form the purls). Drop the slip knot off the needle instead of working it in the first round.
