El Peugeot 305 fue presentado en noviembre de 1977. En un comienzo solo en carrocería Sedan y ya en 1980 se presenta la version Break. Y con dos motores: un 1290 cc, que daba una potencia de 65 CV, montado en las versiones GL y GR; o un 1472 cc de 75 CV de potencia para la versión SR (tope de gama después de la reestilización). El 305 fue el primero de la generación "X05" de Peugeot. En París 1980 , se introdujo el 305 S más deportivo con carburadores gemelos y 89 CV.
La potencia provino de motores de gasolina de 1.3 litros o 1.5 litros y motores diesel de 1.55 litros y más tarde, después del estiramiento facial, el motor de 1.5 litros fue reemplazado por uno de 1.6 litros y se agregaron un motor de gasolina Peugeot 1.9 y diesel XUD
