In this gripping episode we explore a shocking incident caught on
Body Camera, which clearly shows a manic Akeem Terrell handcuffed in the back seat of a Phoenix Police Car, begging not to be taken inside and booked into the Maricopa County Jail, rather asking to be taken to the hospital instead. Akeem told officers if they brought him in the jail, he wouldn't make it out alive...and he was right
Akeem Terrell was out celebrating New Years on the night of December 31, 2021. After midnight, Akeem would end up at an Apartment complex in the City of Phoenix, where sadly he became delusional and started saying things that didn't make sense, and this worried other attendees of the party, so they called the Phoenix Police.
Now Akeem has a history of Schizophrenia and Bipolar disorder, and this complicated the situation even worse when the Police arrived, because Akeem would refuse to leave, and was ultimately arrested for Trespassing by the Phoenix Police.
As the Phoenix Police arrived to the Maricopa County Jail with Akeem, the body camera footage picks up, with an audibly manic Akeem asking police to take him to the hospital, and also saying if he was brought inside the jail, we was going to die. After several minutes of trying to get the 430 lbs Akeem to walk out the back of the Patrol car, Maricopa county Deputies and Phoenix police decided to carry Akeem inside, while he yelled out things that didn't really make any sense.
Once inside the Maricopa County Jail, Akeem would continue to say things that didn't really make any sense, and also couldn't follow directions from the Maricopa County Sheriff Deputies trying to book him in the jail, so both Phoenix Police and Maricopa County Deputies grabbed ahold of Akeem, and guided him towards an isolation cell down the hall from the booking area.
Once inside the isolation cell, approximately a half dozen Officers and Deputies took Akeem to the ground, and proceeded to hold him down, while other deputies/officers attempted to switch out his handcuffs from Phoenix PD handcuffs, to Maricopa County Handcuffs, and this would prove to be a difficult task.
For 3 minutes, Akeem had pressure placed on his upper torso by 2 Maricopa County Sheriff Deputies, while he lay face down on the ground, which eventually caused Akeem to go unresponsive, and quit breathing. As Akeem went limp, Officers and Deputies continued to hold him down, and would eventually slowly back out of the cell, while Akeem lay there visually motion less as seen on the security camera footage.
Akeem would lay face down, motionless for almost 6 minutes before Officers and Deputies finally noticed, and opened the cell door to check on him, that's when they realized Akeem was in bad shape. As jail medical staff arrives, the security camera footage cuts out.
911 was called, and Akeem was transported to a local hospital, where sadly, he would never regain consciousness, and would ultimately lose his life.
But this was only the beginning...
Because what would follow would have both the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department and the Phoenix Police Department pointing the finger at one another, while at the same time BOTH DEPARTMENTS were under investigation/held in contempt of court for their guess what??
Lack of internal investigations, and when doing said internal investigations, doing a poor job, with little oversight, disciplinary action, and transparency....but trust them, they'll get it right on this one.
In the end, MILLIONS would be paid out in settlement money, and some pretty shocking revelations would be made into the current state of law enforcement in Phoenix/Maricopa County, including the Hundreds of MILLIONS of tax dollars spent, just to babysit local law enforcement.
