How to design Salon Style Nails

When I first started doing nails, color was the hardest thing for me to grasp. I was so terrible at generating my own ideas for nail sets it was crippling me from moving forward in my career. I always depended on someone else's work. That was so infuriating because it made me feel like I wasn't a "true" nail tech.

I had yet accepted the fact that I had to learn nail art. I honestly felt that it should have just come to me because I spent some much time, energy and money learning how to build a structured set of extensions. I spent so much time in learning how to keep product off the skin, build an apex and use an efile. I had already invested so much, it still doesn't make since that I didn't learn nail art via osmosis. It's laughable now but it wasn't when I was going through the growing pains.

I wish the internet was available and had all the info at my finger tips when I first started. But it didn't exist for me, information wasn't readily available like it is now. I had to learn the hard way, trial and error. Thankfully, I've kept my notebook of tips and trick and now I'm just getting around to sharing some things with you.

So, this video is for the new tech who just don't get color. Everything else is good, but your nail set design just don't hit. This video will teach you how to create a balanced nail look. You know, most beginners struggle with choosing the right colors and how not to have the colors and nail art competing with each other (which throws your nail look off and makes your set look like a inexperienced person created the nail set). So, I decided to make a video to address the problem in hopes that someone finds it helpful.

I think the most visually satisfying nail sets have a dominant nail color balanced by minor supporting element(s) such as another nail color or nail art (glitter, foil or flowers, etc). This 3:2 technique is a good rule of thumb to follow when you are a novice, however as you start to build your knowledge and preferences you will no longer need to depend on this tip, but it will always be there to help you.
