In the south and west of Haida Gwaii much land has been protected thanks to the work of previous generations of Haida. However many parts of the islands continue to face the ravages of industrial clearcut logging and are now patchworks of original forest and tree farm.

Miraculously, one region remains nearly intact. These are the watersheds of the Xuu Gahl (Christie), Gaadang (Otun) and kyaawan (Hancock) rivers on north central Graham island. But every year the roads and clearcuts creep closer and are beginning to reach into these intact ecosystems. They are not protected.

“There is reported to be 4% of the original old growth red cedar left on Haida Gwaii. It needs protection now. A resolution was passed by our Haida people in our Annual House of Assembly Nov. 2022 for the ‘Timber Supply Area’ on Graham Island to become an IPCA-Indigenous Protected and Conservation Area. The world needs old growth left standing. Let’s work together to do that!”
