Information security threats are a continuous issue globally, but some authors identify how there is a shortage of professionals with the right cyber security skills. Meanwhile, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport have documented that there is “A cyber security capability gap", and this has led to an increased emphasis for including cyber security within education. The 2022 BCS Landscape review of computing qualifications in the UK highlights how basic IT literacy has been ingrained throughout most English educational stages, but a vast majority of cyber security topics tends to only be present in more advanced courses.
This talk will focus on the landscape of cyber education and provide an overview of the challenges faced in teaching the subject, identify what is currently being taught in secondary education and why, and discuss the important contextual factors that seemingly influence the teaching and learning context. The talk will finish with some key question that need answering for ensuring effective cyber education.
