Devin Townsends music has always been important to me in one form or another. I discovered the maniacal works of the skulleted madman sometime around my sophomore or junior year in high school. That would have been about 2002/2003. New England Metal and Hardcore Festival featured them at the Palladium downstairs on one of the evenings I attended, and I could not BELIEVE the auditory assault that took place in the grey matter in between my ears! Having never even heard of Dev or Strapping Young Lad before, let alone be standing two rows in front of them, I was ill-prepared for the meal I was about to forcibly ingest.

I don't really remember who I was with at the time, or very much about that particular festival, but god DAMN do I remember Strapping. It would have been too early to be at my blackout drinking days so it's twice a shame! But I do remember Gene being the biggest human I'd ever seen beat drums like that, and that he sat down with a drink in his hand while the rest of the stage hands built his kit around him.

I was really only paying attention to drummers at live events at the time during this age. But THEN Dev came on.. The band smashed one chord together and he screeched "THATS RIGHT, WE'RE YOUR NEW FAVORITE FUCKING BAND," and I'll be damned if he wasn't right! There were few survivors after that.. I'm proud to say I was among them! Left with jaw agape and feeling like a fucking neutron bomb had gone off right in front my face, I was forever going to be a fan of ANYTHING this man did.

They were touring on the self-titled record they put out in 2003. I bought that cd at a Newbury Comics in Salem, NH that is no longer there since they had to relocate to the nearest mall.. But, that would be first piece of music/merchandise I owned from Dev and I listened to it a LOT! Relentless is my favorite song from that record. I wanted to show my appreciation with this cover not only to Dev and his body of work, but to Gene and the SUPERB undeniable legacy of his drumming.
