Summary
Mr. Way, also known as Gerard, has quite the unique voice. He started his vocal journey with My Chemical Romance's first album, displaying his light tone with an aggressive and emotional delivery, while also showcasing some dirty and raspy overtone shrieks. However, his vocals would quickly evolve on the band's next album, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge. Way developed more confidence, and greatly improved his melodic singing, adopting the theatricality of singers like Freddie Mercury and David Bowie, all while maintaining his emo-tinged aggression, rasp and punkish mannerisms. He continued with this approach, while cranking the vocal insanity and creativity up to eleven, on MCR's widely and critically acclaimed album, The Black Parade. On the band's last album before their hiatus, Danger Days, as well as on Way's first solo album, he decided to match his vocals to the lighter rock n' roll sound. By doing so, he provided cleaner and more consistent belting, as well as a more traditional pop-punk sound.
Way's onstage performances don't quite match up to his studio material, often avoiding the higher reaches of his range. He does compensate with energetic and charismatic showmanship, with still solid vocals, though.
Despite not having much vocal training, Gerard Way has established himself as one of the most distinct and celebrated voices in the rock world.
