The hepcats, a subculture that would birth the hipster of the 1940s, were a group associated with jazz, zoot suits, and jive talking. Their influence would be felt over the course of the two decades following the Harlem Renaissance, and holding as a mainstay of the emulation and cultural diffusion of minority groups into American popular culture. So much so that you can't talk about one without bringing the other along like they're a package deal. So is there anything wrong with people loving jazz aside from giving an asthmatic kid a trombone and asking him to play Glenn Miller for three hours? You'll just have to find out in this episode of Subculture Shock.
