UPCOMING: Join us for a Fall 2023 camp created to empower and expose Compton youth, grades 6th-11th to civic engagement & social justice through mural design and conversation. The Compton Mural Project (CMP), in partnership with Compton District 2 Councilmember Andre Spicer, takes 20 BIPOC youth, grades 6-12, through 2 months (October/November 2023) of mural design and conversations learning Compton history, the importance of civic engagement, and what social justice can look like. Students work directly with local artists and community leaders to plan, design and paint murals, activating youth voices, narratives and perspectives. CMP is intentionally designed to work with and empower local community members to get involved in social justice and civic engagement through the lens of art, culminating in a community mural unveiling celebration.

Founded in 2013, Unearth and Empower Communities (UEC) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit located in Compton, California, a city that continues to be impacted by a past system that considered people of color the riskiest to invest in. Systemic racism impacts Compton and creates disparities in many “success indicators'' including wealth, criminal justice system, employment, housing, health care, politics and education. Compton has a population of 95,740 of which 28.5% are White, 28.6% are Black or African American, and 69.3% are Hispanic or Latino (U.S. Census, 2020). Almost 30% of its residents are youth under 18 years. Only 62.2% of youth graduate high school on time compared to 79.1% of Los Angeles County (LAC) youth. Only 8.6% graduate with a university degree compared to 32.5% of LAC. Almost 21% of residents live in poverty.

UEC’s mission is to create pathways to college, employment and entrepreneurship for Compton youth through engagement with STEM education and the arts. Local youth face a myriad of racial disparities. UEC serves BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) and LGBTQ+ youth and addresses systemic inequities and aims for advanced equitable outcomes and social justice. UEC eliminates economic barriers to STEM education, art and cultural programming; builds local community and social capital; addresses economic mobility through internships and mentorship opportunities/partnerships, and provides after school tutoring to improve high school on-time graduation and college enrollment rates.
