In this video, I show you how I mixed the vocal for my track R U Mad which is in the Chris Lake/FISHER style.

We look at some mixing essentials: I give you some vocal equalization tips. I show you my best compression settings for vocals.

And we look at some more advanced vocal mixing techniques like multiband compression, stereo widening, and saturation.

How to mix vocals step by step:

Start with a gate to remove any ambience in the vocal gaps. We use Ableton's Gate to do this.

Then we use Ableton's Overdrive plugin to saturate a specific frequency in the vocal. This makes the vocal cut through the mix.

Next, we run the vocals through a series of compressors. I show you my exact vocal compression settings such as attack and release. These settings help get your vocal upfront in the mix.

At this point, we have a great vocal tone and good vocal compression.

We then use Ableton's Multiband Compressor to bring out the air of the vocal. I use the OTT preset and boost the volume of the top end. Then I use the dry/wet knob to achieve the right balance.

Next, we clean up the vocals with some subtractive EQ. I'm using FabFilter Pro Q to remove some harsh, boxy, and other problem frequencies.

The vocal is really polished at this point.

Now, we're just concerned with how to make the vocal sound even more professional. So I'm using the Oxford Inflator to increase the perceived loudness of the vocal in a transparent way.

This makes the vocal sound modern.

Finally, to give the vocal a little more dimension, we're using Valhalla Room.

At the end of the chain, we just have a limiter to put a ceiling on the sound. And we have some filters that are being automated in the break sections.

The vocal channel is then routed to a vocal group.

And the vocal group is routed to a "Side Chain" bus.

There is some gentle processing on these busses, but the bulk of the processing is on the original vocal track.
