“As a heart surgeon, most of the time that I spend with families is intense because it’s one the scariest, riskiest times for them. My role as a surgeon sets the stage for everything else and that is why it is important to me to be by their side through every stage of care. It’s not just about the OR. I want them to understand every aspect and every option.”

Those are the words of Dr. Mark Galantowicz, Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. A surgeon who wants moms and dads to know that he believes there is hope within every complex heart abnormality. It is the reason he cares for some of the youngest and sickest patients at Nationwide Children’s.

Over the past decade, Dr. Galantowicz and his team have made The Heart Center at Nationwide Children’s an international destination for patients from all over the world. They have pioneered pediatric heart procedures, including “bloodless” heart surgeries, where no blood transfusions are required. They have also redesigned care for infants born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome with a less invasive procedure called the Hybrid Approach. This Stage 1 treatment option allows infants to avoid open heart surgery until they are older and better able to handle open heart surgery.

For Dr. Galantowicz, his job is about skill, determination and compassion. For parents, these are the qualities that make him one of the best pediatric heart surgeons in the world.
