The story of Krishna & Samanthaka mani, is traditionally narrated on the auspicious occasion of Ganesh Puja or Vinayaka Puja; This story absolves any ill effects that can occur if you see the moon on the night of Bhadrapada Shukla Chavithi (4th day of Bhadrapada month in the waxing phase of the moon).


Vinayak Chaturti is one of the most popular festivals in the Hindu calendar occurring during the Badhraprada month (August September) on the fourth day (Chaturti) of Shuklapaksha (the waxing phase of moon). Over the years, Vinayaka Chaturti has emerged as an event of great social, religious and cultural festival and is celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervour across the lengths and breadths of the country.

The significance of Vinayaka Chaturti:

Hinduism heralds Lord Ganesh as the chief (Pathi) of Lord Shiva’s army (Ganas). Therefore, he is given the name Ganapathi. Vnayaka is the title given to Lord Ganapati that suggests that he is the supreme master without anyone above him. Doing the pujas and worship prescribed for Vinayaka Chaturti is believed to win the blessings of Vinayaka who is a simple god and the most easily pleased.

Vinayaka Chaturti Importance:

Vinayaka removes the hurdles in the lives of devotees and blesses them with a clear intelligence, skills, talents, happiness and prosperity. During the celebration, people are expected to listen to the story of Vinayaka Chaturti.

Mother Parvati creates a boy:

Once, Mother Parvati wanted a personal assistant to guard her palace. As per the usual practice, she smeared turmeric paste all over her body during bath which she gathered later and crafted as an image, which she turned into a boy and breathed life into him. The charming young lad was asked to watch over the entrance. When Lord Shiva visited the palace, he was intimidated by the brave lad and denied an entry. Shiva grew angry and severed the boy’s head. Learning about the death of her beloved son, Mother Parvati grew very sad.

Lord Shiva brings the boy back to life:

At the behest of Mother Parvati, Lord Shiva asked the Ganas to fetch the head of an animal sleeping with its head in the north position. They brought the head of a baby elephant which was fixed on the frame of the boy and thus Ganesha came to life with the body blessed by Mother Parvati and the head and life blessed by Lord Shiva.

Vinayaka becomes the captain of Shiva’s army:

In a wonderfully organized ceremony, Ganesha was posted as the captain of Shiva’s army. After the event, Ganesh prostrated before his father and mother. Since he had a huge belly, he could not lie down flat and his body moved like a seesaw. When all those gathered controlled their laughter, the moon worn by Lord Shiva laughed at him.

Vinayaka curses the moon:

Vinayaka felt the arrogance of moon had to be punished as a lesson to others too. Since moon prided his beauty, Vinayaka cursed the moon saying he would start waning from the moment eroding himself day by day to ruin. When the moon realized his mistake and pleaded for life, in all his mercy Ganesha reversed the curse saying that he will wax and wane month after month and if someone saw the moon on a Chaturti day (forth day during the waxing phase), they would invite a bad reputation.

The curse and the repercussions:

Even if by mistake anyone looked at the moon on the Chaturti day, blame befell them. Mythology mentions two such instances when once Lord Krishna and some other time the wives of the seven sages invited this misfortune and later performed Vinayaka Puja to get relieved of the ill-effects. It is said people must listen to the story of Vinayaka Chaturti narrated above at the end of the celebrations year on year.
