The Metro Health Department has confirmed a single case of measles.
The patient, who was reportedly unvaccinated, contracted the disease after recent travel. Most people received the measles vaccine as children, which typically provides lifelong immunity, so the majority of the public is not at risk.
Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist, said, "We basically eliminated measles in the United States-- it was gone--until some parents began withholding vaccinations and measles was imported into this country--and now we have sporadic outbreaks and a large one in Canada, as a matter of fact."
Local and state health leaders are investigating the case, but it is not currently considered an outbreak.
