Swiss watchmaker Omega together with the European Space Agency released the first watch showing the time on Earth and on Mars - Marstimer. The watch is also space-worthy and ready to fly to Mars.

The Marstimer was officially launched on September 27, 2022, at ESTEC in the Netherlands. It is a new model in Omega's Speedmaster family of watches, which are in one way or another related to the theme of space.

The watch was worn by NASA astronauts on the Gemini and Apollo missions and continues to be worn by astronauts today, including those on the International Space Station.

The Marstimer concept was originally developed by engineers at the European Space Agency for the Exomars mission to help operate the Rosalind Franklin Mars rover. The team of scientists contacted Omega, which led to a collaboration to create the new watch.
In addition to telling time on Mars, the X-33 Marstimer watch can find north on Earth and on Mars without using a compass.

Space is a uniquely complex environment. ESA builds spacecraft that can withstand extreme temperatures, vibrations and launch loads, radiation and harsh conditions.
To ensure that the Marstimer watch is ready for use in space, a set of tests was developed with Omega, and several prototype watches were successfully tested before being sold. The back of the watch now bears the words "Tested and Qualified by ESA.
