The National Stock Exchange (NSE), the country’s biggest bourse, is suing the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) to get unrestricted access to Rs 6,000 crore of its revenue kept in a dedicated account for the past four years,

The case is around co-location services; Colocation services is the practice of renting space for your servers and other computing hardware at a third-party provider’s data center facility.

SEBI says that NSE should be prohibited from providing the co-location facility. In September 2016, the capital markets regulator (SEBI) had asked NSE to deposit the revenue generated from offering co-location services into a separate account.

Sebi probed the NSE’s co-location policy between 2013 and 2015 and came to the conclusion that some of the brokers using the facility were given preferential access, allowing these brokers to make unfair gains.

In 2019, Sebi passed an order against NSE, asking the exchange to disgorge Rs 624 crore in the co-location matter. NSE was fined Rs 62 crore in a related matter, taking its total liability in the case to Rs 687 crore.
