In the nomadic language of Afghan shepherds, it’s known as a “Kolah.”

Now imagine walking through the hot, sandy deserts of Afghanistan — where temperatures can soar above 49°C (120°F).
Out here, shade is not just comfort — it’s survival.

This traditional shelter provides a cool refuge during the scorching heat of the day, and a warm sanctuary when icy desert winds blow in winter.

Built by hand near remote borderlands, these structures protect Afghan shepherds from harsh weather, wild wolves, venomous millipedes, and deadly scorpions.

In this video, I begin building one of these traditional survival shelters. It’s not yet complete — it still needs more wooden reinforcements — but even now, you can feel how powerful and practical this ancient design is.
