I'm going to talk about the abstract reasoning questions on the UKCAT test in which you are given two sets of 6 shapes, set A & set B, and then you are asked whether a given shape will fit into set A , set B or neither, by finding the pattern or rules which apply for each of the sets.

These are examples of compound rules because they are made up from two simple rules, combined in different ways. The difficult part is knowing that you've got a compound rule - a clue is similarity across all shapes, and patterns mixed across both groups.
