Описание к видео REKKED - 20 Second Short Film made in Unreal Engine 5

I made my first short film in Unreal Engine! It's only 20 seconds long, but it's a start, right?

For this Real-Time 3D Virtual Production class assignment at CG Spectrum, we learned how to work with the camera inside Unreal Engine 5 and were tasked with setting up six shots. I took things a little further by turning it into a movie.

The environment is from Fab and the characters are from Epic’s Paragon game which they released for free on the marketplace. Thank you Epic! https://lnkd.in/gVbC3yb4.

A couple of people asked how I came up with the story, so I thought I’d share that creative process…

I didn't have a story when I set up the first shot, a dolly intro of our hero, Dekker (the movie title "REKKED" is her name spelled backward :) This particular shot was based on a scene our instructor showed us from the film Interstellar.

After creating this first shot though, I started wondering “what’s she looking at?” And since she had a gun, I thought “monsters... or my favorite - dinosaurs!” As luck had it, I found Buff, a terrifying alien dinosaur character in the Paragon assets.

From there, I just thought it would be cool if the dino was off to her side eating something, so I could rack focus over to it. Then I thought it would be funny if she shot at it and missed.

At this point, I knew how the movie would end, but I still needed to backtrack and show our dinos entering the camp, kind of your classic overhead sci-fi landscape tracking shot, then a Spielberg Jurassic Park inspired close up/pan up of a dino foot rocking the camera as they take off in multiple directions.

I hope that inspires you to make your own short film, and if you don't have a script at the start, don't let that stop you from trying. Take it one shot at a time and just think about what you would enjoy seeing before or after it. Before you know it, you'll have something.

Thanks to my mentor Zach Bernstein at CG Spectrum, and thanks for watching!
