In this month's episode of #WomeninBiosciences: Female Voices at #CICbioGUNE, Dr. Champi Thusangi, postdoctoral researcher at the Computational Biology Lab led by Antonio del Sol, is engaged in a groundbreaking project funded by a Canadian Government grant under the New Frontiers in Research initiative.

Dr. Thusangi’s research adopts an interdisciplinary approach to investigate the potential of neuronal reprogramming as a therapeutic strategy for patients suffering from various neurological disorders. Her work is particularly aimed at addressing significant challenges in treating neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease and stroke, as well as neurodevelopmental disorders like epilepsy.

The core objective of Dr. Thusangi's project is to target non-astrocytic cells in the brain and reprogram astrocytes into specialized neuronal cell subtypes. This innovative strategy aims to replace the lost or damaged cells that contribute to these debilitating conditions. By focusing on this reprogramming process, Thusangi and her team hope to develop more effective solutions for patients who currently have limited options beyond existing drug and rehabilitation therapies, which often fail to cure these disorders.

In her role, Dr. Thusangi is primarily responsible for computational modeling, which involves creating a guide to identify key transcription factors critical for the development of these neuronal subtypes.
