(16 Oct 2019) South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham is sharply criticizing the president's decision to pull U.S. troops from northeastern Syria, saying "this is a national security disaster."
Graham is among other republicans on Capitol Hill who are responding to the president's action in the region and said Trump's decision will allow IS to remerge.
President Donald Trump and Senator Graham, one of his closest allies are exchanging sharp responses around the president's decision to withdraw U.S. troops.
The president during a news conference with the Italian president Wednesday said Senator Graham "would like to stay in the Middle East for the next thousand years with thousands of soldiers and fighting other people's wars."
Trump said, "I think Lindsey should focus right now on judiciary, like the Democrats."  "The people of South Carolina don't want us to get into a war with Turkey, a NATO member, or with Syria. Let them fight their own wars," he said.
"Forget about what I'm saying. Every national security expert that you have to advise you suggest that if we abandon the Kurds, it will hurt us down the road. But ISIS is likely to come back and Iran will be the biggest winner," said Graham.
He worries that with the Kurds fighting for their lives against better-equipped Turkish forces, they won't be able to guard the prisons in Syria that hold thousands of IS militants.
"The ISIS prisoners are more likely to break out than not. Iran is likely to move in to fill in the vacuum created by us"  and "I promise you this. If he goes forward with this and the things that I worry about unfolds, I will hold him accountable" Graham said.
