Convicted child murderer Rick Thorburn has revealed for the first time how he "thinks" he killed his foster daughter Tiahleigh Palmer almost six years ago, telling an inquest he "must have accidentally suffocated her".

The 12-year-old's partially naked body was found on the banks of a Gold Coast river in November 2015, but it was so badly decomposed a cause of death could not be determined.

Almost a year later, Thorburn was charged with her murder and interfering with her corpse.

He eventually pleaded guilty in 2018, but he has never given police an account of what happened the night he killed her.

During a Supreme Court sentencing hearing at the time, it was revealed Thorburn had murdered Tiahleigh after he discovered one of his sons had committed incest against her and it was feared she was pregnant.
