Описание к видео Blink by Malcolm Gladwell Summary | Most Practical Ideas

BLINK BY MALCOM GLADWELL SUMMARY | MOST PRACTICAL IDEAS \\ In this video I summarize one of Malcolm Gladwell's classic works, Blink. This book is all about intuition. How accurate it is, when it's best to use it, and when it can lead you astray.

Gladwell takes us into the real life situations in which our snap judgements can be life saving, or disastrous.

Often our intuition can product better judgements than a thoughtful analysis. That's because our snap judgements know how to cut out all the irrelevant BS and focus on what actually matters.

Often your gut can be a unconscious decisions can be more accurate than your conscious ones.

Our brains uses two strategies when we make choices. We have our logical, slow and analytical brain. Which has to weigh the pros and cons, gather information and use reasoning in order to come to a conclusion. This is a slow process, and it requires a lot ore energy and effort
.
Then we have our unconscious brain that makes snap judgements. We have to power to unconsciously process situations in a split second, and then quickly make a decision based on how we feel.

So, what does the data say? Is your gut feeling right?

Apparently it is. Some examples that Gladwell provides are professional tennis players, who can accurately predict when a player will serve a fault, but when asked HOW they know, they can't explain it. There are art professionals who can spot a fake piece of art, forged. And it's because they have a "feeling" about it.

Malcolm explains that this phenomenon occurs because our unconscious is able to quickly discern patterns and regularities that our conscious mind is slower to process. It's in these type of situations where we should take our gut feelings more seriously.

"there can be as much value in the blink of an eye as in months of rational analysis"

Everyday we make snap judgements. If we didn't our brains would run out of glucose, shut down. In retrospect, we like to rationalize these snap judgement with facts figures and stories so that our actions "make sense".

But often, what we consciously say does not match the choices that we actually make in life. Malcolm shares that our unconscious associations actually influence our behaviour.

Sudy about trivial pursuit and pretending to be a professor or a football hooligan.

This also carries over into the halo affect, and how we automatically associate more attractive people with certain profiles as being a certain way. For instance tall white males are unconsciously associates with competence and power. An example Gladwell gives is that of Warren Harding, one of the worst presidents of all time. He won the election after the end of WW1 because his supporters simply thought he "looked presidential".

Stress can make you autistic and skew your decision making.

If you are in a stressful situation you won't be able to properly tap into your intuition because you'll have entered a "tunnel vision" type of mindset where all your energy and focus will be on a "threat" or the most relevant piece of information. This is often what has caused police officers to kill people because the imminent "threat" of them having a weapon outweighs their ability to perceive a situation rationally. It's best to reduce your stress in order to make all the best decision and snap judgements.

So some ways that our snap judgements can go wrong is by profiling people. People are unconsciously racist. Using simply tests, psychologists have actually shown that many US citizens find it difficult to associate positive qualities with the word "black" as opposed to "white" These prejudice has also been found among the black populace.
