On a field trip with the local rock club to a mine we found amazing cave onyx. The mine is believed to be near or associated with the legendary river of gold. The group has a rare opportunity to dig through the tailings where cave onyx aka kokoweef aka cave popcorn aka coralloids and travertine, are buried. The cave popcorn is comprised of calcite, aragonite and sometimes gypsum. The persistent drip, drip, drip, drip of the calcite aragonite mixture creates orbicular or wave like (depending on how you cut) beautiful patterns in the popcorn formations. There are also stalactites and stalagmites.
