STORYLINE

The normally bustling streets of Montevideo were quiet on Wednesday morning as Uruguayans gathered around television sets to see if their national football team could qualify for the 2006 World Cup finals.

Uruguay was world champion in 1930 and 1950 and after the team won its first leg against Australia 1-0 in Montevideo on Saturday many were confident of going to Germany.

When Australia levelled the play-off on aggregate through Marco Bresciano it became clear to those watching at the 'locos por Futebol' (mad for Football) bar that Uruguay had a major fight on their hands.

The agony for those watching increased as the game went to a penalty shootout.

Hopes were briefly raised when a miss from Mark Viduka cancelled out an earlier save by Australian goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer from Marcelo Zalayeta.

Schwarzer saved the next penalty from Dario Rodriguez and John Aloisi tucked away Australia's fifth spot-kick to secure a 4-2 win.

Aloisi's goal was greeted with almost complete silence as everyone knew that a place at the 2006 finals had gone.

The last time Uruguay failed to qualify was in 1994, although they also sat out the 1982 and 1978 tournaments.
