Our panel of experts take a look at some of the latest stories surrounding breast implants in No Spin Live Episode 9, giving you the true skinny on fact versus fiction. Breast augmentation surgery is definitely one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the world with over 1.3 million performed in 2014 alone according to the latest statistics. It is an arena in which new innovations are the norm both in terms of types of implant used and placement. It is also a procedure that garners a lot of media attention.
Tom Brady & Lady Gaga — Do They or Don’t They?
Dr. Bill Adams of Dallas, TX hosts NO SPIN LIVE, “everybody’s favorite program” where the top plastic surgeons in the country weigh in on the hot topics of the day. Of course, the Super Bowl was still at the top of everyone’s mind, but since these are plastic surgeons, Dr. Adams had to ask: Tom Brady — Botox™, Yes or No? Dr. Jason Pozner of Boca Raton, FL thinks he looks great. “Maybe that helmet’s pushing against his head for so long, it’s smoothed it out, but if he got Botox™, more power to him.” Dr. Sean Doherty of Boston, MA agrees. He saw him at the parade, but he had a hat on so “can not verify the Botox™”. Dr. Dan Del Vecchio, another Bostonian, has no problem with Brady doing whatever he needs to do. “If he’s had Botox™, so what?” He looks great. Dr. Kevin Smith of Charlotte, NC thinks he’s definitely had Botox™ since he must have been scowling in the first half of that game, but it certainly didn’t show.
The other story trending on social media post Super Bowl was Lady Gaga, and her protruding belly. ( https://goo.gl/RkmPVk ) Dr. Smith nipped that negativity in the bud saying Lady Gaga’s a great artist, it was a great show, and “people need to get over themselves.” Dr. Pozner agrees that Lady Gaga is “awesome” and that the pooch debate wasn’t that she gained weight. It was really about a “wardrobe malfunction”.
Leaky Breast Implant, Back in the Media
Johnson & Johnson was recently sued over a leaky breast implant. Is there any validity to the case asks Dr. Adams? For Dr. Pozner, he feels as if this story is taking us back to 1992. After the first implant scare, “we went back to the drawing board. We did tons of studies on this. Implants are safe. They’re going to break. They don’t cause any longterm medical problems.” This lawsuit is just about people looking for more money. Dr. Del Vecchio agrees that this is a frivolous lawsuit. Both the patient and the attorney are simply using litigation to get publicity. For Dr. Smith, it’s really an issue of causality. This women did have problems, but blaming it on an implant that “we know is generally very safe is not the right way to go. People are making this sensational.” Dr. Doherty agrees that this kind of hysterical sensationalism is the last thing that the industry or the patient needs. While Dr. Adams agrees with our panelists, he had to ask: If the implant ruptures, which it can do, does the gel cause health problems? Has that been studied before? “To my knowledge, there’s no evidence that leaking gel, especially the cohesive gel causes any problems beyond” what we already know which is simply local inflammation explains Dr. Del Vecchio. But trying to link a leaky gel implant to osteoarthritis and all kinds of auto-immune diseases has never panned out. Implants are going to malfunction, but “silicone is in baby diapers. It’s in your hair gel. It’s in a lot of tablets. It’s in every body.” In fact, in over 34 studies, it’s never been proven to cause any health problems whatsoever.
Destination Plastic Surgery — Good Idea or Not?
Las Vegas is fast becoming a destination for plastic surgery tourism. Is this kind of thing a good idea or not? For Dr. Del Vecchio, whether it’s good or not, it makes sense. People like to go to Vegas because they like gamble so now they can do that and get plastic surgery. Dr. Smith counters that’s there’s “no reason to go cross country” for plastic surgery. There are good plastic surgeons in Vegas, but there are also good plastic surgeons in your city.
