In June 2020, the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) suspended Pakistan International Airlines’ (PIA) operations to the United Kingdom. This action followed the European Union Aviation Safety Agency’s (EASA) decision to withdraw PIA’s Third Country Operator safety certificate, prompted by concerns over the validity of pilot licenses issued in Pakistan after a tragic plane crash that killed 97 people.  

In November 2024, EASA lifted its four-year ban on PIA, citing restored confidence in the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority’s oversight capabilities. However, the UK CAA has not immediately followed suit. While acknowledging the importance of air services between the UK and Pakistan, the UK CAA emphasized the need for a rigorous safety case to be demonstrated before resuming operations.  

As of March 2025, PIA has expressed intentions to resume flights to the UK and is seeking permission from the UK’s Department for Transport. The UK CAA has indicated optimism about recommending the removal of Pakistan from the UK Air Safety List in the near future but has not provided a specific timeline for lifting the ban.  

In summary, the UK has not yet authorized PIA to resume flights due to ongoing assessments to ensure that all safety concerns have been adequately addressed.
