New Backyard Feature: Speakeasy-inspired Cedar Gate

Rustic decor and softwoods are not particularly my thing. However, as I've delved into timber framing, and more outdoor applications of woodworking, softwoods and more rustic design have begun to appeal to me more. Enter this video on building a backyard speakeasy gate from western red cedar. Speakeasy style doors and gates are defined for the most part by a porthole that can be looked through to see to the other side. Traditionally, these are done with a mini door that can be opened and shut to keep unwanted visitors out. This commission included three rustic cedar gates, one with a proper speakeasy door, one without, and a small doggie style door (no pun intended) for a modern yet historic home here in South Florida. Using construction grade lumber, this video documents building a cedar gate from start to finish in a more modern and refined fashion, with a rustic flair. Instead of battens and shadowbox, this solid cedar gate relies on a breadboard end to keep the door flat and the rounded over edges allow water to run off accordingly to prevent long term damage from exposure to the elements. The epoxy is a great alternative to traditional glues, even outdoor rated glues as it has longer setting times which makes the glue up easier but also is distinctly used for applications with lengthy water or element exposure. While for the most part, this is a pretty DIY wood gate, using construction grade materials and simple techniques, there are some traditional elements demonstrated. Breadboard ends, done with an ever so slight modification on the traditional, allows the beginning woodworker to elevate their techniques and approaches to this project and others. I also would be remiss if I didn't mention that this video is dedicated to Aaron Mattia who unexpectedly passed. Aaron was Jimmy Diresta's shop assistant who I met at the Blackthorne Timber-In just a few weeks ago. Aaron was helpful, polite, and exactly as everyone described. You may notice that I've been messing with a new opening in some of my videos, a blatantly copied @NickDiGiovanni opening tossing a @jimmydiresta ice pick into my workbench. I traded Jimmy a Cow Dog shirt for that ice pick and odds are that ice pick was probably soldered together by Aaron. It's probably also worth noting that take took about five tries and I spiked the ice pick against my workbench each time and it subsequently smashed against the wall and the floor. The ice pick stayed intact, which assuming it was made by Aaron speaks to the quality of his work. I'm honored to have crossed paths with him and those who watch this video understand how deep this maker/woodworking community is and the strength he and others have brought to it.
