Jogeir Toppe is a Fishery Industry Officer at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. His responsibilities cover mainly fisheries post-harvest activities including aspects of food safety, value addition and improved use of fish by-products. At FAO he has been focusing on how fish by-product can contribute in lowering levels of malnutrition. More than two billion people are deficient in one or more micro-nutrients, fish by-products are a particular good source of many of these nutrients and could therefore play a more important role in our diets. Prior to joining FAO he was involved in feed development for new aquaculture species and improved use of by-products from the fisheries industry at NOFIMA, Norway.

Jogeir Toppe was interviewed during the advanced course on "Fishery by-products: technological innovations and uses", held from 22 to 26 September 2014 in Zaragoza. This course was jointly organized by IAMZ-CIHEAM and FAO and brought together internationally renowned speakers from several institutions and organizations to share their experiences on the different possibilities of upgrading by-products generated in different fish processing industries, technological innovations in processing fish by-products, as well as to evaluate technological challenges and realistic market opportunities for the resulting products.
